Through a partnership with a leading virtual mental healthcare provider, Hazel Health, we are raising funds to install a virtual mental healthcare option for all students of the Stanwood-Camano School District (SCSD). For as little as $15 per student per year we can expand the capacity of available resources to SCSD counselors through virtual access to licensed mental health providers.
Funding challenges across Washington State are preventing schools from meeting the need of the youth mental health crisis which has exploded in recent years. Additionally, community resources and licensed counselors are at capacity. The Hazel Health program will provide complete coverage for the mental health needs of all SCSD students along with providing the technology to access it for around $75,000 per year based on current enrollment.
The BeLegendary Movement has a written commitment from SCSD Administration to install this program once we have the initial $75,000 needed to launch the program. Our goal is to have this available by the start of the 2025-2026 school year. We are also working with the Snohomish County Council on requirements to submit for federal funds to make this a permanent program funded through federal mental health dollars, but we need proof of concept to apply.
The largest barrier to youth participating in extra curricular activities such as sports, clubs, dance, camps, etc. is the ability for their parents to cover the registration and required equipment costs. We never want to see money be a barrier to participation. Through our Scholarship Fund we offer scholarships to cover a majority of costs required for participation in a desired activity. The activity could be an individual camp, a small set of classes/trainings or an entire season. We are firm believers these activities are one of the greatest opportunities for youth to build skills they won't be taught in school.
Washington State is towards the bottom of the nation for access to mental health and substance abuse care, but we sit near the top of these conditions on a per resident basis. Most counselors have no capacity for new patients and many have stopped taking insurance, leaving patients without options or significant out of pocket expenses. Finding mental health counselors who can or will take youth is next to impossible.
Through the Scholarship fund we reimburse uncovered expenses related to mental health or substance abuse treatment as well as associated costs required to seek that care, including patient and parental travel, hotel, expenses while traveling.
Scholarships are available for any resident of Washington State. We are currently reviewing and preparing to launch our Scholarship Application. If you have an urgent need, please use the Contact Us page to request assistance.
The concept for The BeLegendary Movement was born after participation in the 2021 Buddy Bowl Football Game. Preston Dwoskin's Buddy Bowl football game has become an annual BeLegendary event, occurring following the end of the North Cascade Youth Football's season. Funds raised by the Buddy Bowl go straight into our Scholarship Fund.
2025 will feature a large expansion of the Buddy Bowl games including an expanded format for the football game and laying plans for expansion into other sports genres. Stay tuned for exciting developments to be announced soon!
